The Black Wizard
Lewis Price (1849-1913) | worked hard to invest most of his money in real estate. Price became one of Denver’s wealthiest men around 1890, referred to as “The Black Wizard” in response to his financial success. Empowered by his convictions that Blacks were the equals of whites, Price was well known for hiring white servants in his two-story mansion. On Sundays he was known to ride through the neighborhoods of Capitol Hill in his coach with all white horses and a white driver.
