manifest destiny

Manifest Destiny Manifest Destiny was the belief that the United States was destined to expand from the Atlantic Seaboard to the Pacific Ocean; it has also been used to advocate for or justify other territorial acquisitions. Originally a political catch phrase of the nineteenth century, it eventually became a standard historical term, often used as a synonym for the expansion of the United States across the North American continent. A treaty with Spain, properly known as the Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819, ceded Florida to the United States. The Oregon Treaty, officially known as the Treaty with Great Britain, in Regard to the Limits Westward of the Rocky Mountains, was signed on June 15, 1846 and ceded present-day Oregon, Washington, and Idaho to the United States. The Mexican Cession is a historical name for the region of the present-day southwestern United States that was ceded to the United States by Mexico in 1848 under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War. In all these acquisitions the grid system of land ownership and conveyance prevailed.
