Because some are still struggling with this…🤦🏾‍♀️

Just as you wouldn’t dress your black child up like a monkey because of past disgusting racist stereotypes of black people being compared to apes, don’t dress them up as racist caricatures of themselves either. The word “pickaninny” itself was not originally a derogatory term, but the racist imagery that was created for it (e.g. the Topsy character) definitely was. Lovecraft Country only featured the Topsy and Bopsy pickaninny monsters to highlight the UGLINESS of that age old stereotype by having Dee first flee from, confront, and then literally fight those hurtful images forced upon her (and other black children like her) of unimportant subhuman… creatures. Just as Bobo (Emmett) was treated when he was tortured and murdered. And in doing so, LC compared it to how many racists in and outside of law enforcement today see black children as disposable trash. In fact, back during the time of “Topsy”, black children and babies were thought so little of that “pickaninnies” were actually used as live alligator bait. Especially in Florida. Yes, you read that right. Look it up, it actually happened. And this was so well known and common that it was a running joke on postcards, comics, and in old cartoons where black children were being hunted by predators for their “dark meat”.
So I repeat, THEY created these images of uncared for children as propaganda AGAINST us TO BELITTLE AND DEHUMANIZE US. The writers of the show themselves even asked that you not dress up as Topsy and Bopsy because of their racist origins. You have sense enough not to dress yourself as a “Mammy” or “Sambo”, so why would you dress your child up as unkempt unwashed unintelligent neanderthals? You’re literally doing the racist’s job for them when you dress your kids just as they prefer to see them. However stylized.
