Josef ben-Jochannan (1918-2015) was a master teacher with a forceful command of ancient and contemporary history. He used wit, humor, and common sense to accent history and expose historical distortions. Dr. Ben taught on the faculty of colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. He was a Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Languages, Al Azhar University (Arab Republic of Egypt), and for many years served as Adjunct Professor of History and Egyptology at Cornell University’s Africana Studies and Research Center.

For more than five decades Yosef ben-Jochannan – researcher, author, lecturer – led what has now become a mass effort to emphasize African contributions to the world. “African Origins of the Major Western Religions,” first published in 1970, continues to be one of Dr. Ben’s most thought provoking works. This critical examination of the history, beliefs and myths, which are the foundation of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, remains instructive and fresh. By highlighting the African influences and roots of these religions, Dr. Ben reveals an untold history that many would prefer to forget.

The Black Classic Press edition of “African Origins of The Major Western Religions” is a facsimile edition, with an added index and extended bibliography.

“In the “Book of the Dead,” the origin of “Heaven” and “Hell” are clearly seen to be nothing more than places, poor ones at that, of the indigenous African of Egypt’s “NETHER WORLD” and “MYSTERIES” develop along the Nile Valley, all of which stemmed from civilizations that preceded the birth of the first Haribu (Hebrew or Jew) – Abraham (Avram or Abram) centuries before the creation of the first Hebrew nation – Palestine. Therefore, in this work, the God “RA” is shown to be the…”jealous God” who wants “no other God’s before me”, etc. This, the Hebrews copied in Egypt and changed in the following manner:

“Thou shalt have no God’s before me, sayeth Yvah.”

~ The Honorable Dr. Yosef A.A. ben-Jochannan

“Because of their mental enslavement to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the Africans and African-Americans who have for one reason or another been forced to abandon their own indigenous religions, need to know their role in either of these three.”

~ The Honorable Dr. Yosef A.A. ben-Jochannan
